Preface

Acquisition of basic and advanced shiphandling skills is essential for safe and effi cient operation of different tanker types. These skills have to be trained and exercised in realistic but extreme situations before boarding a ship.
Theoretical hydrodynamic basics have to be transferred in applicable and practical knowledge to support Captains, Pilots and Offi cers in decision making and shiphandling skills.

Objectives
  • Basic skills: Basic shiphandling theory and hydrodynamics.
  • Advanced skills: Special functions and features. Practical shiphandling in complex and difficult situations.
Content
  • Basic and advanced shiphandling theory.
  • Hydrodynamic effects: Bank, suction, channel and vessel interaction.
  • Ship to ship interaction.
  • Calculation of external forces: Wind, current, bollard pull.
  • Propulsion and resistance forces.
  • Operations and precautions in heavy seas.
  • Casualties and hull damages due to bending moments.
  • Tug handling.
  • Shallow water, squat and wedge effects.
  • Berthing, unberthing, anchoring and mooring operations.
  • Manoeuvering exercises on different Tankers in moderate and extreme conditions.
